Megan Carroll

2nd year International Studies student at UNSW. Interned at Amex as part of Co-NNECTIONS in 2020.

Megan, tell us a little about your what bought you to UNSW, and what you love about your area of study?

I have always been interested in the humanities and going into University I did not really know what I wanted to do. I chose International Studies because I loved the idea of looking at things with diverse global perspective. I love the structure of the degree because it gave lots of flexibility to pursue so many interests and opportunities.

What was your experience of the Leadership Camp like, early on in the program?

The Camp was a really great opportunity to not only to meet other people in the program, but to also learn more about myself. I definitely reflected on my strengths and challenges when working in a team, and when acting as a leader. These learnings really aided me during my internship and I believe they will continue to help me throughout my professional life.

Who did you undertake your internship with? Tell us a bit about the experience.

I interned with American Express in an acquisition role. It was such a fantastic experience to work in a business environment and it has really opened my eyes to the corporate world.

What were the real benefits for you in taking part in Co-NNECTIONS this year?

The program has really pushed me outside of my comfort zone in so many ways. It was my first real experience in any kind of corporate environment and this has given me so much more confidence to put myself out there and try new things, and perspective around my future career.

What’s next on the horizon for you with your career?

I wish I could say I had it all figured out now. I have really loved my experience at American Express so I would love to go back into a corporate role at some point. But first I have to finish my degree.
